Arga Gateway

Mining Heritage Museum

The Arga Gateway of the Viana do Castelo Geopark, installed at the headquarters of the Arga and Lima School Group, is a piece of equipment under the Classified Areas Management Office of the Environment and Sustainability Division - Department of Territorial Management, Cohesion and Sustainability of the Viana do Castelo City Council, which is responsible for its planning, management and preservation.

This gate constitutes a tourist-educational reception center dedicated to the enhancement of the identity heritage of the right bank of Ribeira Lima, allowing visitors to know the local classified areas, namely the 3 natural monuments (Turfeiras das Chãs de Arga; Cascatas da Ferida Má and Cristas Quartzíticas do Campo Mineiro de Folgadoiro-Verdes), the 2 SCZs of the NATURA2000 Network (Lima River and Serra de Arga) and the Castro de S. Silvestre de Cardielos archeo-site. In addition to promoting the mining heritage, it also intends to encourage visits of the remaining geopark territory, with itinerancy centered on the Geoparque Gates Network, reinforcing sustainable tourism, and raising awareness of the importance of protecting and conserving classified natural and cultural elements.

The Argas Gateway is valued by the Argas Mining Heritage Museum, which highlights and enhances the theme of mining heritage, through the appreciation of an important collection of material used in the mining of tungsten and cassiterite (tin ore) mainly from the time of World War II, but also reference documentation, photographs, oral testimonies from former miners and the mining chansonnier. It consists of 5 areas: area A - Reception for visitors; area B - Patron Room of the Argas Gateway; area C - Exhibition Area: a) the Mine, b) the Miners and c) the Ores; area D - Area of activities and areas E - Toilets.
